After German national team coach Joachim Löw left out Sandro Wagner of his preliminary squad for the World Cup in Russia, the Bayern München striker responded by announcing that he will never play for 'Die Mannschaft' again.

However, Wagner has now extended his hand towards Löw, saying that he is grateful that he was ever given the chance to play for Germany.

"What I didn't manage to communicate very well when I retired is that I will always be very grateful to Joachim Löw for even making me a national team player. I'll do that despite the disappointment that I wasn't called up," Wagner told Sport Bild.

Germany eventually crashed out already at the group stage, but would the team have done better with Wagner? The 30-year-old says he will leave that assessment up to others.

"It would be easy to make a few clever coments about the exit, but that's not my style. Luckily, we have many very qualified experts in Germany," Wagner said.

Wagner made eight appearances for the German national team with five goals to his name.
