Confirmed: Ji Dong-Won becomes fifth Mainz loan-out of January transfer window

Mainz's veteran South Korean attacker Ji Dong-Won will play the rest of the Bundesliga season in the second division.
Twenty-nine-year-old forward Ji Dong-Won made just ten appearances for FSV Mainz 05 since coming to the Pfalz on a free transfer ahead of the 2019/20 season. Early Friday morning, the Nullfünfer confirmed that the underused former Augsburg and Darmstadt striker would be their latest personnel move of an exceptionally busy January transfer period.

The Taeguk national team star barely featured at all for his latest Bundesliga club. In parts of seven seasons with Augsburg, he did score 13 goals in 123 German top flight appearances. His last semi-successful season in the top division came during the 2018/19 campaign.

Dong-Won is one of eight other players the Rheinhessen have loaned out since the beginning of the season. In January alone, the club has also shed its roster of Aaron Martin, Dimitri Lavalee, Jean-Philippe Mateta and Issah Abass.

Club sporting director Martin Schmidt noted that the six-month arrangement with Eintracht Braunschweig was concluded at the the request of the player, who sought more playing time. SkyGermany reports that a purchase option evidently is not part of the deal.
