Ever since the draw, Wolfsburg have scored 9 goals while not letting in a single goal in the back of their net. Instrumental to this run of form are two center-backs who have been absolutely flawless in Wolfsburg’s last 6 matches – John Brookes and Maxence Lacroix.
Both have appeared regularly for Die Wölfe, registering a combined total of 46 appearances. Of the two, Lacroix’s rise to the top has been unprecedented. Last August, he transferred to Wolfsburg for a mere €5m from Ligue 2 side FC Sochaux. Since then, 20-year-old Lacroix has established himself as an integral member of Oliver Glasner’s starting eleven – appearing 24 times and registering more than 2,000 playing minutes.
Apart from the two center-backs, performances by Kevin Mbabu and Paulo Otavio on the wings in the full-back position has been pivotal in maintaining a strong offensive push for the team – by feeding frequent passes to Renato Steffen and Ridle Baku, through Xaver Schlager and Maximilian Arnold - who themselves act as anchors.
The team’s form of late – especially the defensive heroics – have propelled Wolfsburg to a fantastic fourth position in the league currently and in real contention for a top three finish in the Bundesliga.
VfL Wolfsburg sit level on 39 points with 3rd placed Eintracht Frankfurt, who are ahead by a +1 goal difference.
