European dream ends for Leverkusen with 0-2 home defeat

By Peter Weis   @PeterVicey

Germany lost both of its 2020/21 Europa League representatives in a span of a few short hours on Thursday. The tough times for Peter Bosz's Werkself continue as Young Boys Bern ensured their elimination from European club competition.

The man who may potentially be Borussia Mönchengladbach's next head-coach completed a fine audition on Thursday as his Swiss Champions won for the first time ever on German soil and chucked Germany's red company team out of Europe via a 6-3 aggregate scoreline.

Peter Bosz attempted to construct, for the first time, a 3-2-4-1 spearheaded by Patrik Schick. Daley Sinkgraven partnered with Charles Arnaguiz in midfield while Leon Bailey slotted inward to work alongside Florian Wirtz behind the striker. Jeremie Frimpong and Moussa Diaby worked the wings.

Bern's Gerardo Seoane countered with a well-tailored 4-4-2 that. The competing constructs led to a long tactical stalemate with very few chances coming in the first half. Wirtz did well to send Schick through in the 39th with a clever trick, but YBB Silvan Hefti was able to clear off the line.

For the second consecutive match, Leverkusen back-up keeper Niklas Lomb made a grave error. Two minutes after the restart, the 27-year-old dropped a cross directly into the path of striker Jordan Siebatcheu, who nodded in from close range.

Bosz made several offensive-minded substitutions to bring his team back from the deficit, but the introductions of Lucas Alario and Demarai Gray did not come attached with the requisite creativity needed to generate quality chances.

Though this improved in the final quarter of an hour, the Swiss guests were eventually able to take advantage of the spaces afforded on the counter to double their advantage. Christian Fassnacht scored his side's second away-goal in the 86th to put the result beyond all doubt.
