Lars Stindl has admitted that coming up against Manchester City in the Champions League 'was a step too far' for Borussia Mönchengladbach.

The Gladbach captain shared his thoughts on the difficult last-16 tie with City, which saw 'Die Fohlen' exit 4-0 on aggregate after Tuesday's 2-0 defeat.

"This tie was against one of the best teams in the world. We had very little grip and very few chances because City were unbelievably good again. We expected a lot of ourselves and created a few half-chances, but one of them had to go in," Stindl told reporters after the game.

"We tried to play our way through, but against a side like this that play the way they do, it’s so hard and they were better than us over 180 minutes. You have no time and space and the time window to play the ball deep shrinks quickly.

"We didn't get in the decisive areas enough. A goal would have done a world of good because we put the hard yards in tonight. They were so good and, for us, I think we have to accept that it was a step too far."

Tuesday's defeat means Gladbach have now lost their last seven games in all competitions.
