Xabi Alonso puts Gladbach links to bed as he signs new Sociedad deal

Xabi Alonso has ruled himself out of the running to replace Marco Rose as Gladbach coach by extending his contract with Real Sociedad.
Xabi Alonso has ended speculation linking him with Gladbach by renewing his contract with Real Sociedad until 2022.

Bild reported earlier this week that Alonso was set to take over as Gladbach coach from Dortmund-bound Marco Rose at the end of the season.

However, the report was later contradicted by Kicker, and the former Spain international has now put speculation about his future to bed himself as he has extended his stay as Real Sociedad reserve coach by a further season.

Earlier this month, Gladbach sporting director Max Eberl spoke about his search for a new coach, telling ZDF:

"I have had very, very many and good conversations. I am on a good path. We lined up a number of candidates, with which we have dealt. We are already on the home stretch with this focus of ours - we have a clear plan."
