Peter Knäbel named new Schalke head of sport

Schalke 04 have appointed Peter Knäbel as head of sport on a permanent basis.
Peter Knäbel has been appointed new Schalke 04 head of sport, the Bundesliga outfit have announced.

Knäbel, who has been working as the club's technical director for young talent and development since 2018, was installed as interim head of sport after Jochen Schneider was relieved of his duties in February, and it has now been decided that he will continue in the role on a permanent basis.

"Peter Knäbel's work is characterized by strategic thinking and a clear signature. He has demonstrated this not only in the last three years as Technical Director for Young Talent and Development, but also in recent weeks as the person with overall responsibility," said Dr. Jens Buchta, chairman of Schalke's supervisory board.

"We have great confidence that he will successfully lead the reorganization of the professional player department. At this point, we would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the other members of the squad planning task force, Norbert Elgert and Mathias Schober, who - in addition to their actual duties - have played an unmistakable part in the planning for the 2nd Bundesliga to date."

Although Schalke aren't mathematically certain to be relegated from the Bundesliga, their hopes of survival appear slim. 'The Royal Blues' are rock bottom, having taken just 10 points from 26 games, with eight matches left to play.
