Rudi Völler to step back as Leverkusen boss in 2022

Bayer Leverkusen sporting managing director Rudi Völler has revealed he is set to retire in 2022.
Rudi Völler has confirmed that he's planning to step back from his role as Bayer Leverkusen sporting managing director in the summer of 2022.

"I'll retire in 2022 – at least from this job. It's the right time now because the club is basically very well-positioned, although we haven't delivered convincing results in the past two and a half months," said Völler in an interview with Sport Bild.

"I'll discuss with [chairman of the shareholders' committee] Mr. Wenning whether I will continue in another role. However, after so many years in the front row, I certainly need a bit of distance first," added the 60-year-old.

After hanging up his boots, Völler has spent more than 20 years working for Bayer Leverkusen.
