Borussia Dortmund came close to pulling off a sensational draw at the hands of Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday, but ended up losing their Champions League quarter-final first leg 2-1 after Phil Foden scored a late winner.

Speaking after the game, captain Marco Reus and experienced centre-back Mats Hummels expressed delight with the performance, but not with the result.

"We played at a very high level tactically throughout the game. You could tell that Manchester City had a lot of possession, but we stayed calm and waited for our chance. It's brutally annoying that we conceded a goal like that at the end because we now have to win the second leg," Reus told reporters.

"It was a very good game from us, but we didn't reward ourselves for the effort and energy on the pitch. It's very bitter, but everything remains open, and we believe we can go through."

According to Hummels, Dortmund should be performing like they did against Manchester City every week.

"We did a lot of things really well and put in a great performance. We played exactly the way you would expect Borussia Dortmund to play – with a lot of passion and commitment. If we had been a little more effective, we could have scored more than one goal," said the centre-back.

"If we hadn't conceded the last-second goal at the end and had gone home with a 1-1 draw, we would definitely have been happier. Unfortunately, we gave away a very good result in the end. Nevertheless, we still have a good chance in the second leg. Our performance and the result show that we can keep up with them."
