FC Köln have confirmed that Markus Gisdol has been relieved of his duties as head coach with immediate effect.

The announcement was made after Köln suffered a 2-3 defeat to Mainz in a relegation six-pointer on Sunday.

"We absolutely wanted to win the game against Mainz. Eve, though the performance was good, we came away with no points. It was a bitter defeat," said FC Köln managing director Horst Heldt.

"Until the end of the season, we now have six games in which we absolutely want to achieve our goal of staying up. For that to happen, we need to get results. In this regard, we have stagnated in the last weeks. With a change of head coach, we want to give the team a new impulse with a new constellation heading into this decisive phase."

Speaking to the Express, Heldt has confirmed reports that Köln want to appoint former Fortuna Düsseldorf boss Friedhelm Funkel as their new coach.
