Brandt and Schulz earn Germany comeback win
Germany defeated Peru 2-1 in a friendly thanks to goals from Julian Brandt and debutant Nico Schulz.
Nico Schulz scored the decisive goal in his international debut as Germany won 2-1 against Peru at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena in a friendly. Thilo Kehrer and Kai Havertz also had their debuts.
German coach Joachim Löw made a few changes from the team that drew 0-0 with France on Thursday with Marc-André ter Stegen, Niklas Süle, Nico Schulz, Ilkay Gündogan and Julian Brandt all making their way into the line-up.
From the start of the game, Germany were the commanding team, and 'Die Mannschaft' created numerous big chances during the first half.
With 12 minutes played, Toni Kroos swung in a corner and found Matthias Ginter totally unmarked, but the defender couldn't steer his header past Pedro Gallese in the Peruvian net. Eight minutes later, Marco Reus directed his shot wide after he received the ball in a promising position in front of goal.
While Germany couldn't get the ball into Peru's net, the guests just needed one chance to score in the other end. With 22 minutes played, Luis Advincula spinned past Nico Schulz and smashed the ball into the net at the front post, taking Marc-André ter Stegen by surprise.
However, Peru didn't get to be in the lead for more than a few minutes as Germany gave an almost instant response. Just a few minutes later, Julian Brandt received a good ball from Toni Kroos and cleverly chipped the ball over Gallese to equalise - a great goal by the new German number 10.
Germany continued producing chances, but neither Timo Werner or Ilkay Gündogan were able to get the ball past Gallese who ensured that the score at the break was 1-1.
Peru looked a different side from the start of the second half and came close on a number of occasions. Both Raul Ruidiaz and Jefferson Farfan got the chance to shoot from promising positions within the German penalty box, but neither of them managed to hit the target.
In the other end, Timo Werner could have taken advantage of a German counter-attack as he was through on goal after receiving a good diagonal pass from Julian Brandt, but the RB Leipzig striker lifted his attempt over the goal.
It started to look like a draw, but with five minutes left of regular time Nico Schulz took a shot on goal from the edge of the area and saw the ball sneak past Gallese and into the net for a debut goal. Peru didn't bounce back from that, and Schulz's goal ensured Germany a 2-1 win.
