Official: Augsburg replace Herrlich with Weinzierl

Augsburg have officially sacked Heiko Herrlich as coach and brought back Markus Weinzierl as his replacement.
FC Augsburg have confirmed that Heiko Herrlich has been relieved of his duties as head coach following Friday's 2-3 defeat to FC Köln in the Bundesliga.

Markus Weinzierl, who served as Augsburg coach from 2012 to 2016, has been appointed as his replacement.

"In the detailed analysis, we came to the conclusion that we need to make a change at the coaching position," said Stefan Reuter, Augsburg managing director for sport.

"We then held extensive and very good talks with Markus Weinzierl over the weekend. Here we came to the conclusion that Markus is absolutely the right coach for the current situation and that he feels an enormous desire to work at FC Augsburg again.

"We would like to thank Heiko Herrlich and [his assistant] Iraklis Metaxas for their commitment to our FCA and wish them all the best for their future. However, we lacked the belief in the end to make the remaining games successful in the previous constellation."
