Mainz opened the scoring through Karim Onisiwo after 11 minutes and held on to the lead until the 86th minute when second-half substitute Ajdin Hrustic found the equaliser for the home side.
With just two league games left to play this season, Frankfurt's Champions League destiny is now no longer in their own hands, with Adi Hütter's troops sitting fifth, one point behind Borussia Dortmund in fourth place.
For 12th-placed Mainz, the draw means they can no longer be directly relegated from the Bundesliga this season.
