Kicker Report:
Mainz's Aaron Martin in line for return to Germany

German footballing magazine Kicker reports that Mainz full-back Aaron Martin Caricol may be on his way back to the Bundesliga after Spanish side Celta Vigo declined to exercise their purchase option on the 24-year-old.

Mainz's one-time record transfer's future is once again up in the air after a reported €7 million purchase clause proved too rich for Celta Vigo's blood. The former Espanyol Prodigy, obtained by Mainz for a record fee in 2018, did make 19 appearances in his home country during the second half of the season.

The 24-year-old fullback, who goes by the simpler moniker of "Aaron", put in a transfer request after falling out of favor with previous trainer Achim Beierlorzer and, later, a further lack playing time under interim FSV trainer Jan Mortiz-Lichte.

When Christian Heidel and Martin Schmidt returned to the club as part of a wholesale regime change in December 2020, they acceded to the player's request by shipping him out on a six-month loan to La Liga. "Aaron" did not get the opportunity to play under the auspices of Bo Svensson, who engineered an improbable rescue from relegation.

In conveying this news, Germany's preeminent footballing publication merely postulates that the fullback's future is again uncertain. A re-negotiated purchase clause or even a loan extension could still be an option.
