Schmidt: 'Being a head coach is not the healthiest profession'

Former Mainz and Wolfsburg coach Martin Schmidt says being a Bundesliga coach takes its toll on you.
Martin Schmidt, who stepped down as VfL Wolfsburg coach in February, has reflected upon what it takes to be a Bundesliga coach, saying that it's an extremely demanding job.

"To be a head coach is not the healthiest profession," Schmidt said in an interview with NZZ and added:

"At night, you think about the transfers you want to make. You get up in the morning and face the daily problems. You have to lead the coaching team, you have a squad and the work on the pitch. In addition to that, there's the environment at the club and the media. It's just a lot."

"You have to be creative every day and know what to say to the press. You have to be diplomatic. You can't just say what you think. It takes a lot of enthusiasm and brains," Schmidt said.

Schmidt served as head coach at Mainz from February 2015 until May 2017 when his contract was dissolved prematurely. In September 2017, Schmidt was hired as Wolfsburg coach and worked there until he resigned in February 2018.
