Marcel Schäfer has signed a contract extension as VfL Wolfsburg sporting director.

The 37-year-old's contract, which was due to expire next year, has been extended until 2025.

"I joined VfL Wolfsburg in 2007 and have always been very attached to the club and the city, even during my time in the United States," said Schäfer, who played for Wolfsburg from 2007 until 2017, when he joined Tampa Bay Rowdies.

"Everyone who knows me knows how I feel about VfL, so I'm very happy that my path at VfL is continuing. I also have the feeling that my development here hasn't peaked, that I can learn something new every day, and that the club still has a lot of potential.

"I am proud and happy to be part of this project and look forward to continuing to work alongside Jörg Schmadtke to ensure that the path we took here three years ago continues to lead upwards and that we will master the challenges we face together."
