Joachim Löw, Germany coach:
"It's a big disappointment for all of us. The belief in this team was absolutely there. But in games like this, it's crucial to consistently take advantage of the few chances you have.

"When things like Thomas Müller's chance happen, you just have to accept it. He normally scores in a situation like that. Today we needed that goal, but I can't blame anyone"

"I believe that some of our players will still develop. We have a lot of young players. They will learn from this. At the European Championships in 2024 at home, some will be at an absolute top level. You can expect quite a bit there (Sportschau)".

Manuel Neuer, Germany captain:
"That was a huge opportunity for us. We missed it, and that's why the disappointment is huge.

"It was a very sad feeling when I saw Jogi now. He is a great person. We all owe him a lot. That it's coming to an end like this is a shame and very sad" (Sportschau).

Toni Kroos, Germany midfielder:
"It was a very even game until the opener. Both teams neutralized each other. Therefore, it's bitter. What was missing? Not much. Effectiveness, perhaps. Until 1:0 it was an even game, we played well. Bitter. In the end, it's disappointing to be knocked out in the round of 16. We prevailed in a tough group, but it's disappointing now."

Kai Havertz, Germany forward:
"We kept creating chances after we conceded, but didn't take them. It was a bitter evening. But we're all in the same boat and we're a unit. England don't have too bad a team. If you crash out in the round of 16, of course it's disappointing, but now we have to move on."

Michael Ballack, former German international:
"That was a bit sobering, I have to say in all honesty. Germany seemed powerless in the game. It was obvious in the first half that we lacked solutions. A deserved victory for England, congratulations" (UEFA.com).

Fredi Bobic, former German international:
"We absolutely deserved to be eliminated. Even in the group phase we couldn't understand the way the German team were playing. Today there were also question marks – no forward play and no courage" (UEFA.com).

Declan Rice, England midfielder:
"It's incredible, a lot of people had written us off in the group stage, complaints about the performances, not scoring enough but we want to put people wrong, with a full house everyone had the fire in the belly to one, knock Germany out and two progress in the tournament" (BBC).

Raheem Sterling, England forward:
"We knew we needed to put a big performance in against a very good side, and I think we did that today. We knew the intensity that we can play at, not a lot of teams can deal with it. The two boys in midfield {Rice and Phillips] were class, they ate up ground, they were just animals in there."
