Leverkusen aim for first Bundesliga win after vital confidence boost

After taking a much needed win in the Europa League yesterday, Bayer Leverkusen hope to carry on and win their first Bundesliga game of the season on Sunday.
Bayer Leverkusen returned to winning ways in the Europa League last night as 'Die Werkself' defeated Ludogorets 3-2 after being down 2-0.

Heiko Herrlich's team have lost their first three Bundesliga games of the season, but - boosted by last night's win - the Leverkusen coach hopes to turn the downward spiral around with a victory over Mainz on Sunday.

"We have gained confidence, and of course we want to continue on Sunday. We stayed calm and turned the game around. The team showed great morale and proved that they can have the right mentality," Herrlich told Kicker.

Bayer Leverkusen captain Lars Bender stressed that the team need to continue working hard above all.

"On Sunday, we have to deliver a similarly unified performance and show the same amount of passion. It was evident again that the basis is hard work. Then the technical class that we have in the team will probably also show. But first, we need to bring the basics to the pitch," Bender told Kicker and added:

"I hope that everyone is ready to do the same on Sunday."

Bayer Leverkusen will face Mainz at the BayArena on Sunday at 15.30 (UTC+2).
