One week to go until the start of the new 2. Bundesliga season as the first match kicks off on Friday 23rd July as Schalke and HSV battle away. Teams are ending their respective training camps and playing their final few test matches. Here is the 'week before' big preview for the 2021/22 Zweite Bundesliga.

SV Werder Bremen


Werder Bremen and Markus Anfang bolster their defense as Lars Lukas Mai joins on loan from FC Bayern and Nicolai Rapp transfers to Bremen from Darmstadt. Anfang gets two players he coached from Darmstadt and look good for the first game against Hannover 96.

Schalke have a blockbuster first match against Hamburger SV and Grammozis' side have looked solid in pre-season with two goalless draws facing Zenit and Shakhtar, they have lost key men in Sebastian Rudy and Suat Serder but all departures seem to be helping the Gelsenkirchen club in their financial crisis.

Hamburger SV



HSV know they will have to travel to the Veltins-Arena on the first match of next season and new coach Tim Walter will be ready with his attractive style of play, but HSV will have to grit and grind wins this season to have a chance of promotion, Ludovit Reis from Barcelona is a great midfield capture for the Hamburg side and a good investment as a free transfer.

Darmstadt have lost many of their players from last season and will need to regroup with new coach Torsten Lieberknecht and they are looking for new midfield players, two Swedes Gustav Berggren and Leo Bengtsson from BK Häcken are in their sights.

Torsten Lieberknecht replied to relevant media reports:

St. Pauli's impressive second half of the season saw 'Kiezkicker' rise from relegation candidates to a comfortable mid-table team. An average season for the Bavarian's saw the 36-year-old coach Robert Klauß take charge, the former striker led Nürnberg to 11th in the table with help from top-scorer Manuel Schäffler and central-midfielder Johannes Geis who ended up with seven assists.

Aue really have a wildcard coach for the new season as Aliaksei Shpilevski may be a great acquisition for 'Veilchen' or could be the first manager sacked in the season. Nevertheless, Aue will be one of the teams that may be in a relegation battle or could surprise everyone and be a solid mid-table side.

FCE president Helge Leonhardt was quoted on the new appointment:

"Despite his young age, Aliaksei is already very experienced and has worked in various positions in various youth training centers as a responsible coach in the Bundesliga. After several intensive discussions, we were able to determine that he fully identified with the values ​​of our association. We also reached agreement on the approach to the strategic development of our professional team."

Hannover 96


Hannover has a new captain: Marcel Franke will lead the Lower Saxony team on the field in the coming season. The 28-year-old replaces Dominik Kaiser.

Here's what Franke said:

"Of course I am honored to be the captain of Hannover 96," said Franke. "I am happy to take on responsibility. I am definitely not planning to do anything big differently, but will continue to try to lead the way with performance. Otherwise it is clear: Everyone who belongs to the team council will be involved. We will all be together have responsibility."

SSV Jahn Regensburg


Scott Kennedy will be missing for the start of the season as he is away with Canada for the Gold Cup and Schalke's Matthew Hoppe is also away with the US. Regensburg also have a new prospect, Bayern has loaned Sarpreet Singh to Jahn.

"Sarpreet has already familiarized himself with the demands of the 2nd division [at 1. FC Nürnberg]," Bayern's head of youth development Jochen Sauer noted in a statement, "Now he should continue to develop in a sustainable fashion at this level in order to take the next step."

Ingolstadt did it the hard way in the relegation-playoffs for the third consecutive season, but this time they were successful with a 4-3 aggregate win over VfL Osnabrück. They return back to the 2. Bundesliga for the first time since 2018/19.
