Köln's local newspaper, the Kölner Stadtanzeiger reports that Dominick Drexler is on his way out of the cathedral city and the German top flight. A transfer to FC Schalke 04, for approximately €600,000, should be confirmed tomorrow.

From Köln's perspective, the move is somewhat surprising. Even though die Geißböcke urgently need to reduce a presently oversized 32-man-roster, Drexler did complete two solid seasons for the Effzeh since their promotion back to the top flight. The numbers put up by the 31-year-old journeyman man were nevertheless nowhere near as high as those in his 2. Bundesliga career.

Drexler gained a reputation as something of an assist-meister during his time in the lower divisions. He regularly set up Terodde, one of the most prolific 2. Bundesliga scorers ever, when the pair played for Köln during the 2018/19 promotion campaign.

German footballing magazine Kicker reports that the veteran has his medical lined up in Schalke tomorrow morning. In theory, both Terodde and Drexler could be in the starting XI for Friday's season opener against Hamburg.

Drexler has scored 23 goals and set up a further 37 in 97 2. Bundesliga appearances for Köln, Kiel, Fürth, and Aalen.
