Mainz consider Luca Kilian loan-out to Köln

Germany's Sport Bild reports that 1. FC Köln's search for a new central defender leads to a neighboring carnival club.

A deal that could potentially benefit both sides may be imminent.

With their preferred candidate to replace Sebastiaan Bornauw evidently now out of their reach, Germany's cathedral city club may now seek to reunite Luca Kilian with head-coach Steffen Baumgart.

FSV Mainz 05 snatched up young German prospect Luca Kilian for a reported €2 million from relegated SC Paderborn 07 last autumn. The former Germany U21 international failed to take off for the Nullfünfter. In point of fact, trainer Bo Svensson relegated him to the U23s shortly after taking charge.

It would appear as if Svensson has practically no use for the former Dortmund academy prospect this season. The Danish head-coach has his preferred back-three in place. Jeremiah St. Juste, Moussa Niakhaté, Stefan Bell, and Alexander Hack actually give Svensson a surplus at the position.

Reporting from Mainzer camp, Kicker on-site reporter spoke to the club's chief sporting executive Christian Heidel about Kilian's future on Tuesday. Though Heidel ruled an outright sale out, the veteran German footballing administrator did concede that "another season without games would be bad for him."

A loan-out thus seems a possibility. Germany's main sporting tabloid reports that there has been some contact between the clubs regarding the player, but no other footballing news source in the Bundesrepublik suggests matters have gotten that far.

Kilian saw limited action under current coach Baumgart during the 2019/20 campaign. The Dortmund native was a regular fixture in the starting XI through the 6th and 18th rounds. Injuries and form drops meant that he barely saw the pitch at the beginning and end of the season.
