Reigning German champions Bayern München survived an early scare to draw 1-1 with Borussia Mönchengladbach in the opener of the 2021/22 Bundesliga season at Borussia-Park tonight.

Gladbach made the better start to the game and missed a few big chances in the opening minutes before finally capitalizing on a shaky start from Bayern when Alassane Plea was played in behind and scored in the 10th minute.

At the other end of the pitch, Gladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer made a string of fine saves to deny Robert Lewandowski and 21-year-old right-back Josip Stanisic, who was handed his second Bundesliga start.

But with a few minutes remaining of the first half, Sommer was left with no chance as Lewandowski volleyed home from inside the box after a Joshua Kimmich corner.

Bayern kept the pressure on in the second half and created several clear-cut opportunities, but Sommer kept everything out.

Gladbach grew back into the game as the second half progressed, and Lars Stindl did well to test Manuel Neuer with 70 minutes on the clock.

Second-half substitute Marcus Thuram caused plenty of problems for Bayern and was brought down twice in the box, but his and Gladbach's penalty appeals were turned away by the referee.

Bayern had one final chance four minutes into injury time as Kingsley Coman set up Joshua Kimmich, but the midfielder couldn't keep his shot on target.
