Ruben Vargas: 'We need to step it up a notch in attack'

Ruben Vargas and Augsburg are striving for offensive improvement after having failed to score in their first two league games of the season.
Ruben Vargas says Augsburg know they must improve offensively after taking just one point from their first two Bundesliga games of the season without scoring a single goal.

"The whole team knows we need to step it up a notch in attack, and I too am aware of this," said the winger ahead of Saturday's clash with Bayer Leverkusen.

"I know what my job on the pitch is and on what my performance will be measured. I try to help the team as best as possible, and I include my defensive responsibilities in that."

After falling to a painful 0-4 defeat against Hoffenheim on matchday one, Augsburg coach Markus Weinzierl was happy to register a clean sheet in last week's 0-0 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt.

But, like Vargas, he still sees plenty of room for improvement attacking wise.

"For us, it's about developing with each game. We kept a clean sheet and were strong defensively in the last game. Now we want to improve in the attacking phase and score more goals," said the coach.
