RB Leipzig confirm signing of youngster from FC Barcelona

Highly-rated midfielder Ilaix Moriba has left FC Barcelona to sign for RB Leipzig.
RB Leipzig have completed the signing of 18-year-old midfielder Ilaix Moriba from FC Barcelona.

The central midfielder has put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the Bundesliga side.

"With the signing of Ilaix Moriba, we were able to bring in an exceptional talent. We are very proud that he chose RB Leipzig despite many offers from top European clubs and that we were able to quickly convince him of our way. We would like to thank FC Barcelona for the good and fair talks," said RB Leipzig commercial director for sport Florian Scholz.

"I'm very pleased that a move to RB Leipzig has worked out," commented Moriba.

"It's an exciting club that has always cultivated an attacking style of play and therefore totally suits my playing style. I'm convinced that Leipzig is the ideal next step for my career and further development. That was ultimately the reason for my decision to switch.

"I'm now concentrating all my efforts on getting to grips with the club, the team and the city, so that I can deliver top performances on the pitch as quickly as possible. We have ambitious goals for this season, and I can't wait for the challenge with the Red Bulls!"

The central midfielder's contract with Barcelona was due to expire next summer. He has featured 18 times for the Catalan club's senior side, racking up a goal and three assists.

More to come.
