Schweinsteiger slams refereeing decision: "A clear penalty nine times out of ten"

Bastian Schweinsteiger feels Germany were denied a clear penalty against Spain.

Germany were robbed of a clear penalty in their 2-1 Euro 2024 quarter-final defeat to Spain, according to Bastian Schweinsteiger.

The Germans called for referee Anthony Taylor to point to the spot when Jamal Musiala's shot struck Marc Cucurella's arm in extra time, but he waved away their protests.

Speaking to German television after the game, Schweinsteiger said he found the decision difficult to understand.

"Somebody has to explain that to me. Nine times out of ten it's a clear penalty. We were really unlucky. I was really surprised," said the former Germany international.

Speaking more generally about the game, Schweinsteiger said he felt Germany deserved more.

"There was an incredible atmosphere in the stadium. That's the most important thing. Of course we would take it with us if we were to win the European Championship. But we were able to take the hearts of the fans with us again and that was the best thing so far.

“To be honest, it's an undeserved defeat because we were clearly the better team from the 70th minute onwards and had the better chances to score.”
