Hertha BSC returned to 2. Bundesliga summit with a comeback win in Dresden. Former Fulham youth team player Jón Dagur Thorsteinsson was the star of the show with his first brace in German football.

Both teams scored with their first shots on target. The hosts took the lead in the tenth minute with Patrice Čović’s strike on his full 2. Bundesliga debut. The 19-year-old Werder Bremen loanee scored after playing a one-two with Vincent Vermeij.

Linus Gechter’s deflection made it difficult for Marius Gersbeck to save the effort of the former Hertha youth player. The visitors leveled the score with Nicolai Rapp nutmegged by Thorsteinsson’s excellent strike.

Dresden then had their best spell of the half as Mads Pedersen and Josip Brekalo were in real danger of straight red cards. The capital city club regained momentum at the end of an action-packed half.

The league leaders had a better start to the second-half. Oluwaseun Adewumi thought he had completed the comeback with his fourth 2. Bundesliga goal, but it was disallowed by VAR for a handball.

Seconds after Christoph Daferner’s decent effort, Hertha took the lead for the first time in the evening. Thorsteinsson completed his brace with an even better long-range strike than his goal in the first-half.

The Iceland international recorded five direct goal contributions in his last four games. Instead of Dresden pushing for a late equalizer, Hertha had a couple of decent chances to extend their lead.

In the end, they held on for a 2-1 lead to maintain their perfect start to the season with their six wins out of six. Dresden entered the season’s first international break in the relegation zone.
