Phil Harres sealed Holstein Kiel’s victory over Eintracht Braunschweig and their safety with his first-ever 2. Bundesliga brace. The lanky striker scored both goals with clinical finishing from well-worked moves by Tim Walter’s side.
The victory extended Kiel’s winning streak to four games. Harres scored four goals during this timeframe, while he assisted last week’s winner against Hertha to Jonas Therkelsen. The duo exchanged roles in the first half-hour of today’s game.
Including Johan Gomez’s powerful hit that was ricocheted off the woodwork, both teams had clear-cut chances in the early exchanges. The deadlock was broken when Therkelsen played one-two with Jonas Meffert before squaring it to Harres.
There were also chances after the restart before Harres netted his ninth goal of the season in the 87th minute. Since there would be several games between teams in the relegation battle, the in-form Kiel side are now safe. Braunschweig could drop to the bottom three if tomorrow’s results go against them.
