Arminia Bielefeld and VfL Osnabrück renew their regional rivalry on Sunday afternoon, with both sides looking to build on their most recent results and move further up the 2. Bundesliga table. Separated by goal difference and level on eight points after seven matches, the two newly promoted sides have an opportunity to gain an early advantage over a direct competitor in what promises to be a fiercely contested encounter.

Bielefeld have made a respectable start to life back in the second tier following their promotion last season. Oliver Kirch’s side have collected two wins and two draws from their opening seven league fixtures, although three defeats have prevented them from making a more significant impression. They begin the weekend ninth in the table, one place above Sunday’s opponents.

Arminia have been particularly difficult to beat at home, remaining unbeaten in their three league matches at the SchücoArena.  A 3-0 victory over Energie Cottbus was followed by entertaining 2-2 draws against St. Pauli and Heidenheim, with their home form providing a foundation on which Kirch will hope to build.

Their first away win of the campaign arrived last weekend, when Bielefeld defeated VfL Bochum 1-0. Joel Grodowski played a decisive role in the victory, setting up the only goal of the game for Benjamin Bokaye as the visitors secured three valuable points. The result was an important response after a difficult run of fixtures and gives the hosts an opportunity to record consecutive league victories for the first time this season.

Kirch has warned, however, that Osnabrück will present a different challenge from their previous opponents. Speaking ahead of the match, the Bielefeld coach highlighted the visitors’ threat on the counter-attack and the importance of maintaining their defensive discipline.

“Osnabrück is statistically the second-strongest counter-attacking team in the league. They win the ball back a lot, transition very well and have plenty of pace up front,” Kirch explained.

“We have to find solutions to pull their defensive lines apart and create goalscoring opportunities without becoming vulnerable to counter-attacks ourselves. We must control the runs in behind and press well after losing possession. That will be the big challenge against Osnabrück.”

Osnabrück arrive in East Westphalia with an identical points tally and an opportunity to leapfrog their rivals with a positive result. Timo Schultz’s side have recorded two wins, two draws and three defeats from their opening seven league games, scoring 10 goals while conceding 13.

Their latest outing ended in a 1-1 draw at home to Dynamo Dresden. Osnabrück looked set to suffer another frustrating result before Robin Fabinski struck in the 87th minute to rescue a point, demonstrating the persistence that the visitors will need again away from home.

The draw extended a mixed run of results for Schultz’s men, but their ability to create opportunities through quick transitions could prove particularly important against a Bielefeld side that is likely to enjoy periods of possession. Osnabrück have averaged just 42 per cent possession this season, while Bielefeld have managed 46 per cent, suggesting that neither team is especially reliant on dominating the ball.

Instead, the visitors will look to win possession and exploit the spaces left behind by the hosts. Osnabrück’s defensive organisation will also be tested by Grodowski, who has scored five times in the league this season, with all five goals coming at the SchücoArena.

Schultz has played down the need for any special preparations despite the regional significance of the fixture, while acknowledging the atmosphere that awaits his team.

“It’s a special game. The fact that we’re travelling on matchday also shows that, regionally speaking, you can definitely call it a derby,” the Osnabrück coach said.

“If it becomes as heated on and off the pitch as it usually does in the stadium, I think we can all look forward to a great Sunday.”

The visitors will be hoping that their recent performances can translate into a statement result on the road. Fabinski’s late equaliser against Dresden highlighted the defender’s importance at both ends of the pitch, while Osnabrück’s pace in forward areas gives them the tools to trouble Bielefeld if the hosts lose their defensive shape.

The historical rivalry adds another dimension to Sunday’s contest. The teams have met 37 times previously, with this weekend’s fixture marking their 38th competitive encounter. Their recent meetings have often been heated, with seven red cards shown across their last 10 competitive matches. Osnabrück’s most recent away victory over Bielefeld came in 2014, with Stanislav Ilyuchenko scoring twice in a 2-1 victory in the 3. Liga.

With both clubs level on points and coming off encouraging results, Sunday’s meeting offers an opportunity to establish some early momentum. Bielefeld will look to make their home advantage count, while Osnabrück will aim to use their counter-attacking strengths to disrupt the hosts and claim a significant away result.
