Darmstadt welcome Energie Cottbus to the Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor on Saturday as the hosts look to kick-start their season against one of the 2. Bundesliga’s most entertaining sides so far.
Florian Kohfeldt’s side have struggled to find consistency during the opening weeks of the campaign, collecting just four points from their first six matches. In contrast, Cottbus have made an encouraging return to the second tier, with Claus-Dieter Wollitz’s men sitting seventh after accumulating eight points.
The fixture also represents a historic occasion for both clubs, as Saturday’s meeting will be their first-ever competitive encounter. With Darmstadt desperate to climb away from the foot of the table and Cottbus aiming to extend their unbeaten run, there is plenty at stake at the Bölle.
Match preview
Darmstadt enter the contest needing a response after a difficult opening to the campaign. Having finished fifth last season, the Lilien would have hoped to build on that achievement, but their early performances have left them with considerable ground to make up.
Their only league victory so far came at home against Arminia Bielefeld, whom they defeated 2-1. However, their most recent outing before the international break brought a heavy 5-1 defeat away to VfL Wolfsburg, leaving Kohfeldt with plenty to address ahead of the resumption.
One of Darmstadt’s biggest concerns has been their attacking output. The hosts have recorded the fewest shots in the division whilst scoring the joint-least in the division, underlining the need for greater creativity and penetration in the final third.
The extended international break offered an opportunity to work on those shortcomings. Darmstadt travelled to San Antonio, Texas, where they trained together and defeated their American partner club, San Antonio FC, 7-0 in a friendly.
Although the result provided a welcome confidence boost, Kohfeldt was keen to put the performance into perspective.”
“Nevertheless, we have to put the game into perspective, as the level of play won't be comparable to what we can expect on Saturday and in the league. Most importantly, though, we were able to be together as a team for the first time in our current lineup.”
Energie Cottbus, meanwhile, arrive in Hesse with reasons to be optimistic. The promoted side have collected eight points from six matches and currently occupy seventh place, making them the best-performing of this season’s promoted teams at this stage.
Wollitz’s side have already demonstrated their attacking potential, scoring 14 goals in their opening six league fixtures. Their campaign has included a 4-3 defeat against Greuther Fürth and a remarkable 4-4 draw away to Wolfsburg, highlighting both their ability to threaten opponents and their occasional defensive vulnerabilities.
Cottbus subsequently recorded an impressive 3-0 victory away to Karlsruher SC before drawing 1-1 at home against St. Pauli. Those results mean they have gone three consecutive league matches without defeat, collecting five points during that sequence.
Their preparations continued during the international break with a 2-2 friendly draw against Polish side Lech Poznań.
The visitors will now look to carry that momentum into a challenging away fixture. Their willingness to build from the back and commit players forward has made them an entertaining proposition, but Darmstadt could look to exploit the spaces left behind when possession is lost.
Kohfeldt has already highlighted the threat posed by Cottbus’ midfield, singling out Leonardo Bittencourt and Lukas Michelbrink for their movement, while also identifying Tolcay Ciğerci as a player capable of deciding a match.
The Darmstadt coach praised the visitors’ adventurous approach but stressed that his team must remain disciplined defensively and avoid allowing Cottbus to create too many opportunities near goal.
That balance could prove decisive. Darmstadt have shown defensive strengths in certain areas, including their ability to limit opposition counter-attacking opportunities, but they will need to translate those qualities into a more complete performance if they are to take all three points.
Team news
SV Darmstadt 98: Darmstadt will be without several players for Saturday’s encounter. Luca Marseiler, Fabian Nürnberger, Matthias Bader and Merveille Papela remain unavailable, while Carlo Sickinger has also been ruled out with calf problems.
Energie Cottbus: Erik Engelhardt and Julian Guttau are unavailable for the visitors.
Key players to watch
For Darmstadt, Lars Kehl could be an interesting option. The summer arrival from VfL Osnabrück has previous experience against Cottbus, having helped Osnabrück win both of their meetings last season. After struggling to make waves in Darmstadt colours as of yet, he will hope to bring that familiarity to a fixture in which the hosts need more attacking inspiration.
Aleksandar Vukotić and Patric Pfeiffer could also have important roles in dealing with Cottbus’ forward movement. Both are among Darmstadt’s strongest performers in individual duels, and their ability to win physical battles will be particularly important against an opponent that commits players forward.
For the visitors, Ciğerci remains a major threat. His ability to influence games from midfield makes him a player Darmstadt cannot afford to give too much space, while Bittencourt’s movement should help Cottbus progress possession and create openings.
King Manu is another player who could prove influential, particularly if the match develops into a physical contest. His impressive duel-winning record offers Cottbus a platform from which to compete in midfield and protect their defence.
