Arsenal were “seriously interested” in signing Leon Goretzka from Bayern Munich towards the end of the winter transfer window, according to Bild’s head of football, Christian Falk.

However, when the Gunners made their move for the 30-year-old, he had already informed Bayern Munich of his desire to remain for the rest of the season.

A move to London could instead happen in the summer. According to Falk, reporting via his website cfbayerninsider.com, there is a “strong chance” Goretzka will join Arsenal once his contract expires at the end of the season, provided the English club makes an offer

Arsenal could, however, face competition from Atlético Madrid and Tottenham, who also showed interest in the German international during the winter transfer window.

Goretzka openly admitted in an interview last week that a move outside of Germany is appealing to him.

“I find it exciting to go abroad at some point in my career,” he told Die Zeit.

"Taking a step out would also be a step for my personal development. Getting to know something new would enrich my life as well."
