Bochum eye Kenneth Schmidt as Bernardo replacement

With the future of defender Bernardo still up in the air, Bochum are continuing to broaden their list of possible replacements, with Freiburg's Kenneth Schmidt being discussed as per reports from SKY Germany.

The 29-year-old Bernardo continues to be courted by sides across the Bundesliga despite a recent collision in training leaving the defender out for this weekend's DFB Pokal clash in Regensburg and possibly next week's Bundesliga curtain-raiser against RB Leipzig.

The departure of the Brazilian is still a possibility, with Union Berlin remaining one of the favourites to secure his signature. Eintracht Frankfurt also remain interested, however at the time of writing, the acquisition is deemed too expensive for the club.

Kenneth Schmidt has been named as one of the possible replacements for Bernardo, with Bochum adding the 22-year-old to a list containing the previously reported Jakov Medic of Ajax.

It is still unclear as to whether a departure from Freiburg would be a possibility for Schmidt, however, Bochm remain interested and a loan deal could be possible between the two clubs.

Schmidt made only five appearances for Breisgau-Brasilianer across the course of the 2023/24 campaign.
