Bosnia and Herzegovina legend Edin Džeko retires from international football

FC Schalke striker Edin Džeko retires from international football after Bosnia and Herzegovina's 1-1 draw with Sweden. There was a special atmosphere at Bilino Polje in Zenica as fans chanted the name of the 40-year-old the entire game.
Fireworks also lit up the stadium in the 11th minute for their long-serving number 11 on his 152nd appearance. Džeko started the game, and his goal in injury-time of the first-half promised a fairytale ending to a special career.
However, the goal was ruled out because the ball was out of bounds before the delivery by ex-Bayer Leverkusen youngster Kerim Alajbegović. The 2008/09 Bundesliga champion with Wolfsburg was substituted off after the hour mark with the whole stadium applauding him one last time.
The game ended 1-1 as Alajbegović cancelled out the opening goal from the former St. Pauli striker Viktor Gyokeres. The two teams sit top of Group A4, as neither has lost a game.
Meanwhile, Robert Lewandowski scored a hat-trick as Poland beat ten-man Romania 6-0 in the other game from the group. Poland will host Bosnia and Herzegovina on Monday, while Džeko will now return to Schalke after deciding on international retirement.
