Lennart Karl responded to the recent controversy with a stellar performance on the pitch with two goals and an assist in FC Bayern’s 5-0 friendly win against RB Salzburg. Bayern’s sporting director Christoph Freund addressed the issue before the game.

“Lennart (Karl) wears his heart on his sleeve,” said Freund in an interview with ServusTV, an Austrian station owned by Red Bull Media House GmbH. “He’s not afraid of anything. That’s how he plays football. It was unfortunate, and he realised that immediately.

“He also apologised for it. We spoke about it. He came to us to say it wasn’t meant that way at all. He feels extremely comfortable at FC Bayern. As a child, he once trained with Real Madrid, which was his dream club at the time. But he’s now very happy at FC Bayern. And, we are very happy that he’s with us, too.”

Karl was part of the second-half team Vincent Kompany used in the only friendly before Sunday’s Bundesliga restart at home against VfL Wolfsburg. He scored a brace in addition to his assist for the 18-year-old Felipe Chávez against RB Salzburg.
