After a summer of transfer rumours linking him with German clubs, David Alaba could possibly be on the brink of a Bundesliga return.

Popular tabloid Sport BILD understands that the the 34-year-old could be closing in on a move to current topflight strugglers Hamburger SV.

The reason for this is the Hanseatic outfit's run of consecutive 5-0 defeats, leaving them rooted to the bottom of the Bundesliga table.

Alaba – once of Bayern Munich and Real Madrid – is without a club and could be signed despite the transfer window being closed.

The same applies to Jannik Vestergaard, who also boasts considerable Bundesliga and could be an alternative option for HSV.

Despite being plagued by numerous injuries in recent years, the Austrian's salary demands are likely to exceed Hamburger SV's budget.

Serie A side Lazio recently showed interest in Alaba, while another possible destination currently leads to Club América in Mexico.
