Despite being able to prevent relegation to the second division, VfL Wolfsburg will continue to rely on the expertise of Dieter Hecking.

The Wolves' former interim coach will take up his new role as managing director for sport on 1 June and has signed a contract until 2028.

“The trust and appreciation of the club, the supervisory board, and especially Diego Benaglio and Pirmin Schwegler mean a great deal to me.

"My initial focus was on whether to continue working as a coach or to pursue a career as an administrator.

"Having made this decision with complete conviction, I am very much looking forward to the great task ahead, even though it will bring many challenges.

"To be quite honest, the relegation [against SC Paderborn] is still weighing on me,” said Hecking about his new role.
