FC Schalke 04 sealed their promotion back to the Bundesliga last night with a 1-0 win over Fortuna Düsseldorf, but questions followed the celebrations regarding Edin Džeko's future.

“I made the right decision with the move. Getting promoted and going to the World Cup with Bosnia is a dream," Džeko said, speaking to Sky Germany after the game.

“Maybe I wouldn’t have achieved that without Schalke. For now we enjoy the moment. Now we celebrate. Have a few drinks,” he added, but remained tight-lipped on what lays ahead.

"There is still plenty of time to think about what I will do next. When I see all of this, that’s why you play football. I don’t want to stop, I feel good.

“But I am 40 years old. Let’s see how I feel after the World Cup. Then we will sit down and talk again,” explained the veteran Bosnian marksman with a smile.

At least for the Royal Blues, there was some positive contract news elsewhere – in clinching promotion, coach Miron Muslic's deal was automatically extended to 2028
