Elversberg climbed to second spot in 2. Bundesliga after a 5-1 victory over promotion rivals Paderborn. After missing out on a first-ever Bundesliga promotion via the playoff, the modest club are now on the driving seat with only two rounds left to play. Both Paderborn and Hannover, who failed to beat bottom-placed Greuther Fürth at home, are a point behind Vincent Wagner’s men.

Lukas Petkov was the star man as he now has 19 direct goal contributions this season. The Bulgarian scored twice in the first-half after providing the assist for the opening goal in the fourth minute to Maximilian Rohr. January additions David Mokwa and Raif Adam scored the other goals for Elversberg.

The hosts will face relegation-battling Fortuna Düsseldorf and Preußen Münster in the remaining weeks of the season. Paderborn will hope to recover from back-to-back defeats as they face two teams who have very little left to play for in Karlsruhe and Darmstadt. Coupled with Hannover's draw, this result also confirmed Schalke as champions.
