SC Freiburg have announced that Matthias Ginter has signed a new contract with the club.

The Breisgau outfit confirmed on Tuesday that the 32-year-old centre-back will continue his spell in Freiburg, with the length of his new deal undisclosed.

“Matze is a key figure in our team,” said chief sporting officer Jochen Saier.

“The quality and consistency of his performances have been hugely impressive, and he’s played an important role in the team’s development. Even after so many years in professional football, Matze is still as driven and ambitious as ever. We’re delighted that he’ll be staying with us.”

Ginter came through Freiburg’s academy before making his Bundesliga debut in January 2012.

He made the switch to Borussia Dortmund in 2014 and later moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2017, before returning to Freiburg in 2022.

“SC has been a huge part of my life since I was a kid, when I used to stand in the children’s section at the Dreisamstadion. The way the club has developed since then has been incredible. We want to keep building on what we’ve achieved together and continue pushing ourselves," Ginter said.

The 32-year-old has made a total of 255 appearances for Freiburg, scoring 20 goals and providing 19 assists.
