FC Barcelona and Spain star Lamine Yamal was one of the leading contenders for this year's Ballon d'Or, but ultimately finished behind Kylian Mbappé and winner Harry Kane in the rankings.

Speaking on Friday, FC Barcelona coach Hansi Flick admitted that Kane deserved the honour, while also praising Yamal and insisting that the 19-year-old has what it takes to win the award in the future.

“Harry Kane deserved it, but you already know what I think about Lamine,” Flick told the media on Friday, according to FC Barcelona's official website.

“He's at the level required to win this award. I'm very proud of Lamine. He reacted very well and was very focused in training. That's the way to respond. His mentality is very good for the team," the German coach added.

After being rested for Bayern's 6-1 win over 1. FC Magdeburg in the DFB-Pokal on Wednesday, Kane is set to return to action following his Ballon d'Or triumph when the German champions face familiar foes Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker on Saturday.
