Paul Nebel could still leave Mainz 05 this summer as he doesn’t want to extend his contract with the club. The 23-year-old will be a free agent at the end of the upcoming season, which would put Mainz at a disadvantage in terms of losing out on a potential transfer sum.
Accordingly, Mainz 05 head of sports Christian Heidel confirmed to BILD that the two parties verbally agreed on a summer separation if it benefits both sides.
“There is no piece of paper between Paul and Mainz 05. But, with him and his management, we clearly discussed how to proceed,” said Heidel as Mainz continued their preparation for the upcoming season with a 3-0 victory over Holstein Kiel.
“There is a clear agreement. If Paul (Nebel) comes to us with a club to which he would like to go, and if they make us a market-oriented transfer offer, we will endeavour to reach an agreement. If the offer is not significant, we will not agree to a change.”
According to Transfermarkt, Paul Nebel’s market value is €18 million. The attacker has scored 15 Bundesliga goals since winning a regular place in Mainz after a loan spell in Karlsruhe.
