Freiburg have made an impressive start to the new campaign with two wins from two, while Saturday's opponents Borussia Mönchengladbach are still searching for their first points.

However, boss Julian Schuster believes his side's experiences last season warn that difficult periods can quickly become sources of motivation.

“It was quite simple,” he told DAZN before the match, when asked how he ensures full effort against out-of-form opposition.

"We just had to remind ourselves of the difficult periods we had last year.

"In football and sport, just as in private life, these situations are always an opportunity to grow and for something new to emerge.

"That happened to us last year. Why shouldn't it happen to our opponents? It can be nuances, a few tweaks, a few adjustments, and suddenly the world can look completely different again.

“Of course, that's something we're preparing ourselves for.”

Schuster also praised the development of his own players following Freiburg's strong start to the season.

“I think it’s simply the logical confirmation of what happens when you really invest a lot every day,” he said.

“That’s not only on the training pitch, but also the time before and after training and the great togetherness within the group.

“Those are things the boys really implement to perfection, and then usually the logical consequence is that you can see the steps being made in their development.”
