Vincent Kompany adopted a calm and measured approach when analyzing Michael Olise's red card during their 3-3 stalemate with Viking FK this evening in south-west Norway.
“He knows he made a mistake. You can see that he's sorry about what happened and that he regrets letting the team down," the Bayern coach said in the mixed zone afterwards.
"That's absolutely fine – these things happen. Today wasn't a final or a semi final, but these are the kinds of moments that can have a decisive impact on a season.
"When you're much better than your opponent, sometimes you just need to play your game and focus on being the better team rather than getting involved in unnecessary situations.
“I told him that the opponent outsmarted him. We can't change that now. Hopefully we can look back on this as a moment when we learned a lesson,” Kompany added.
Regarding the game itself, where his team came from two behind to take the lead before conceding a late equaliser, the Belgian stated “it was entirely our own fault.”
"We were very much on top, just as we were at the weekend. There are certainly aspects of our performance that we can take positives from, and the overall quality of our play wasn't that bad.
"But we keep making concentration errors and aren't making smart enough decisions in these moments. Against Augsburg, we conceded after just eight seconds; today, it was after a minute and a half.
"In that situation, we didn't necessarily have to play the ball out from the back following the corner. We could perhaps have opted for the long ball instead. We knew that, too, but there was a bit of overconfidence involved.
“At the moment, it feels as though every chance our opponents get ends up in a goal. But that's no excuse, because we're the ones creating these situations for ourselves,” he concluded.
