Maximilian Beier stepped up in the absence of Serhou Guirassy, scoring twice as Borussia Dortmund beat Mainz 3-1 on Sunday.

BVB coach Niko Kovac was understandably delighted with what he saw from the former Hoffenheim man.

"Two goals, that's sensational. That's how I see it," Kovac said at his post-match press conference.

“Of course we're happy with ‘Maxi’. He's played a lot in the last few weeks because he does what we want him to do in training.”

In the absence of Guirassy, Karim Adeyemi partnered Maximilian Beier up front and provided an assist.

"Of course we miss Serhou, but the two of them played differently today than when we play with Serhou," Kovac said.

“Serhou is someone who likes to lay the ball off. The two of them tend to go deep and try to break down the opposition. That's useful too and I hope we can make use of that in the next few games.”

Next up for BVB is a Bundesliga trip to Freiburg on Saturday.
