RB Leipzig showed more intensity and determination than in their heavy defeat against Bayern Munich, but still left Madrid empty-handed. Goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt produced several outstanding saves, yet Real Madrid’s attacking quality proved decisive as the Spanish giants claimed a 4-1 Champions League victory.

Match report: Real Madrid vs. RB Leipzig

RB Leipzig started brightly at the Santiago Bernabéu, matching Real Madrid in an evenly contested opening 15 minutes. Martín Demichelis’s side pressed with far greater intensity than in their 6-1 defeat against Bayern Munich on Saturday, but the hosts created the better early chances. Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham both came close to opening the scoring.

Leipzig then produced the best opportunity of the opening 30 minutes: after a battle for possession involving Ridle Baku and Brajan Gruda on the right, the ball fell to Rômulo on the edge of the box. His first-time effort looked dangerous, but Thibaut Courtois reacted brilliantly to keep the game goalless.

The two Belgian goalkeepers continued to impress. Leipzig’s Maarten Vandevoordt made spectacular saves to deny Vinícius Júnior twice, while Courtois kept out a promising effort from Christopher Nkunku at the other end.

Madrid finally broke the deadlock shortly before half-time. A slick one-touch move ended with Federico Valverde driving the ball into the penalty area. Vandevoordt initially blocked Arda Güler’s attempt, but Bernardo Silva reacted quickest to turn the rebound home from close range and give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Madrid carried their momentum into the second half. Just six minutes after the restart, Mbappé sent a header across goal and beyond Vandevoordt. Arda Güler followed up faster than Leipzig captain David Raum, who was unable to prevent the Turkish midfielder from making it 2-0 in the 51st minute.

From that point, the Spanish side took control. Mbappé appeared to put the result beyond doubt in the 83rd minute, curling a superb finish into the net from the edge of the penalty area.

Leipzig responded almost immediately. Christoph Baumgartner combined with substitute Tidiam Gomis to pull a goal back just two minutes later, briefly raising hopes of a late comeback.

Those hopes were quickly extinguished. Substitute Yan Diomande received a cross from Brahim Díaz and volleyed the ball confidently to restore Madrid’s three-goal advantage, sealing a 4-1 victory for the hosts.

It was a difficult evening for Demichelis and Leipzig, who were punished for their defensive lapses despite a considerably improved performance. Madrid, meanwhile, continued their impressive European campaign with another convincing result.
