Nadiem Amiri has taken responsibility for his missed penalty after Mainz fell to defeat against Eintracht Frankfurt.

The midfielder had the chance to bring Mainz level from the spot, but failed to convert despite having scored his previous ten penalties.

Speaking to DAZN after the game, Amiri admitted the miss could have changed the course of the contest, while also conceding that Frankfurt were deserved winners.

“Frankfurt were superior in every respect today, you simply have to admit that honestly,” Amiri said.

“Of course, I think the key moment was the penalty. If I score that to make it 1-1, maybe the game turns out differently.

“I definitely take responsibility for that. I took responsibility and today I failed. That’s part of it. That’s football.

“But like I said, Frankfurt deserved it today.”

Amiri was also asked about his exchange with goalkeeper Noah Atubolu before the penalty, with the Mainz midfielder suggesting the Frankfurt stopper had attempted to put him off.

“Noah tried to unsettle me. Most goalkeepers do that,” he added.

“Normally I score it. Today I failed, and that’s part of it.”
