Kicker Report:
Monza back off pursuit of Brekalo

Reporting from VfL Wolfsburg's training camp, Thomas Hiete of Germany's Kicker magazine claims that Josip Brekalo's move to A.C. Monza is looking increasingly unlikely.

A transfer reported upon by Italian journalist Nicolò Schira has so far not materialized. According to Thomas Hiete of Germany's preeminent footballing publication, A.C. Monza have actually not been made a concrete offer to VfL Wolfsburg for the purchase of Croatian winger Josip Brekalo. The 24-year-old attacker sits on an expiring contract and has long been looking for a way out of Germany's northern "Autostadt".

Hiete writes that the Serie A side are reluctant to take on a player with a reported €3 million annual salary. Moreover, Monza coach Raffaele Palladino prefers Serbian winger Darko Lazovic of Hellas Verona as an attacking reinforcement on the wing. As was the case with other interested parties for Brekalo in the past, the inconsistent and expensive Brekalo is viewed as an impractical solution.

Brekalo's German club has made no secret of its desire to cash in on the player, not to mention get him off the payroll. The 33-times-capped international himself certainly seeks a new locale to earn more playing time and revive his stalled career. Brekalo hasn't featured in the VfL starting XI since matchday 12 of the current campaign.

Brekalo has been linked with his hometown club of Dinamo Zagreb.
