Union Berlin win race for Danish striker

German 2023/24 Champions League representatives 1. FC Union Berlin unveiled Danish striker Mikkel Kaufmann as a new signing late Monday afternoon.

Amid interest from a reported five separate Bundesliga clubs, Danish youth International Mikkel Kaufmann has opted to sign with Germany's Köpenick capital city side. Union Berlin unveiled the 22-year-old FC Copenhagen center-forward as a new player late Monday afternoon. The former Hamburger SV and Karlsruher SC loanee was promptly assigned the #9 tricot.

As is customary with Union, details about the deal were not divulged. Danish tabloid "B.T" nevertheless reports that the Berlin-based club shelled out some €2.7 million for the striker. Kaufmann found himself a much sought-after commodity following a strong season on loan in Karlsruhe last year. Kaufmann netted ten goals and contributed ten assists in 32 appearances across all competitions for the 2. Bundesliga side.

"With Mikkel, we get a flexibly deployable striker who can act both in the center of the attack and as a support attacker," FCU managing director Oliver Ruhnert remarked in a statement accompanying the signing, "His development over the last few months has been on a steep upward trajectory. That's why we are very pleased that he has chosen us among many other options."

"The move to Union is a huge step in my career and I am very happy to join," the player himself remarked, "In the talks with those responsible, it became clear that as a young player, I have the chance to develop here. I'm looking forward to the new challenge and will do everything I can to fulfill my potential and put myself at the service of the team."
