Omar Mascarell is considered the most likely candidate to take over the role as captain from Alexander Nübel who leaves Schalke 04 at the end of his contract in the summer.
Mascarell has played an important role for Schalke since David Wagner took over as coach in the summer and wore the captain's armband in the club's last two games of 2019 while Nübel was suspended.
It's unclear if Nübel will remain captain until the summer, now that it's clear that he will be leaving Veltins-Arena.
The 23-year-old's position as Schalke's first-choice goalkeeper could be under threat as well, with some calling for Markus Schubert to take over the responsibility.
According to reports, Nübel is set to join Bayern München in the summer.
