VfB Stuttgart have reportedly stepped up their interest in SC Freiburg centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck, who spent the 2020/21 campaign on loan at Union Berlin.

According to Kicker, Stuttgart have held 'intensive talks' with the player and his representatives.

The 21-year-old could come in to replace Marc Oliver Kempf, who's likely to be on the move this summer after turning down a contract extension at Mercedes-Benz Arena.

RB Salzburg are also said to be keeping tabs on Schlotterbeck, who would cost around €8 million.

Schlotterbeck made 17 appearances for Union Berlin during the 2020/21 campaign, scoring twice. He's under contract with Freiburg until 2023.
