Niclas Füllkrug revels in Bremen return after Köln equaliser: 'It's incredible'

Niclas Füllkrug admitted there is something special about wearing the Werder Bremen shirt again after his second-half equaliser earned his side a point away at Köln.

Niclas Füllkrug could barely hide his delight after finding the net once again for Werder Bremen in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Köln.

The striker struck in the second half at the RheinEnergieStadion to cancel out Linton Maina's opener, continuing an excellent return to the club after netting in the 3-1 win vs RB Leipzig last week.

“I think it was simply good for us as a team to come through a game like this here in Köln, in such a heated stadium,” Füllkrug told Sky Sports after the match.

"I think that gives us much more at the moment than just results.

"When you score goals like that after a rebound and the ball somehow falls at your feet, I think those are things you earn as a team.

"The situations you saw in the first half, where we sprinted back after losing the ball, were much more valuable than the goal in the end.

The striker emphasised that Bremen were not at their most fluid, but felt that there were encouraging moments to look back on.

“There was a certain amount of having to work through the game, that's true,” he added.

"But especially in the final ten or 15 minutes of the first half, I thought we had a spell where we rotated well and attacked the spaces well.

“Of course, there was a little bit of quality missing in certain moments. If we play a little cleaner, we get in front of goal more often. We have to finish those situations with more quality, but for today I'm happy with the team's performance.”

He also touched on his celebration, describing his sprint to the travelling Bremen supporters.

“The ball really did just fall at my feet,” he said. "Maybe I was a little bit more alert than the others or expected it.

“Then I ran towards the end and shouted something like: ‘How does this happen? I put this shirt on, and I’m scoring again.'

“It's incredible.”
